Glowsticks Instead Of Fireworks For The Fourth Of July

Category Tips

We camp on the 4th of July in an area where fireworks are not allowed so we came up with this idea. Buy red, white and blue, (or whatever colors you choose) glowsticks, necklaces, etc. at your local 99 cent store. On the 4th, snap your glow sticks and play games of throwing them back and forth, or have contests to see how high someone can throw them in the air. We get creative every year we play with glowsticks on the 4th. It's so fun.

This is great. We did this when our 4 year old twin granddaughters lived with us. Where we live our back yard is TOTALLY dark at nite, no light whatsoever. Not even from the moon because of tree cover. We didn't feel safe giving them sparklers to play with on the 4th (or any other nite), so we stocked up on glow sticks and glow toys at the dollar store. They had a ball out there.

Another plus for them was they were able to play outside (the yard is fenced and the dogs were out there with them) after dark without Grandma and Grandpa being "under foot". I could watch them from the window and the glow toys lit them up just enough for me to see them and for them to see each other and be safe. Made them feel like "big kids" and it was an extra special treat for when they were good that day.

I agree with this idea- lots of fun for kids, parents and grandparents alike. I would like to add a note of caution- just last night our grown kids provided these for all of our grandkids to play with, and they all loved them. But later on that night several of the glow sticks leaked and one of the younger ones got some in her mouth before we realized it was leaking. She vomited several times and then had to sleep for a bit and thankfully, was fine after that.

Just look out for leaks and have fun!
