I don't mean you can get ready sliced tomatoes off a plant :0) that would be silly. However, rather than pay for an expensive pack of seeds, or go to the trouble of picking seeds out of a tomato and drying them, you can actually plant slices of tomatoes. It's so easy to do. Simply lay them out, cover with compost and keep them watered.

I never thought of doing this, but what a great idea, and talk about Thrifty!! I did know that sometimes if a tomato falls to the ground, the next Spring you will see tomato plants.
I like your choice of words, "volunteer" plants. Now I know what to call those. Cool. Thank you :-)
The volunteer plants also end up being the healthiest because they've been exposed to all the elements and best of all - THEY ARE FREE:-)
Last fall I sat a large pumpkin down beside my compost bin, left it all winter, and this spring it had pretty well decayed. I lifted the stem, and when the pumpkin came apart, there were dozens of seeds on the ground, some had sprouted.

I saw this idea last year somewhere so I decided to try it this year. Ummm.....this is so simple to do but I'm still waiting for something to show up...don't know what went wrong !!!
