Homemade Tooth Powder

Would you like to stop putting harmful, unwanted chemicals into your body? Would you like to save loads of money every month? Well I did. Some of the ingredients in commercial oral care products are simply terrible for you! On the other hand, organic versions at health food stores are obscenely expensive.

The solution? For mere pennies and a few minutes, you can make your own. These smell absolutely delightful and refreshing. Now I have 2 things I didn't have before, peace of mind that we are being kind to our bodies and an extra (at least) $11.00 every month. I was getting my products at the dollar store, and still spending that much. Not anymore!

Try this please, you will be healthier and wealthier.

finished products in decorated bottles

Total Time: A few minutes.

Yield: 2 bottles full

Source: Modified from recipes in a book called "Making It".

Supplies:

  • water
  • baking soda
  • peppermint oil
  • tea tree oil
  • glass jars with lids
  • funnel
Baking soda, essential oils and recycled jars.

Steps:

  1. For the tooth powder, you will put 1/4 cup baking soda into a clean glass jar. I used an empty jelly jar. When you are making this for nearly nothing, why would you want to spend an arm and a leg on an expensive container?
  2. Baking soda being measured into a funnel.

  3. Add 20 drops pure peppermint oil.
  4. A bottle of peppermint oil.

  5. Mix well with a spoon.
  6. Homemade Mouth Rinse and Tooth Powder

  7. Place your lid on and you are done. To use, simply wet your toothbrush, scoop a generous amount onto it and scrub away!:) Rinse well after use.
  8. For the mouth rinse, you will put 1 cup water into a glass jar. Add 1 teaspoon baking soda, 4 drops of peppermint oil, and 2 drops of tea tree oil. (The tea tree oil makes the rinse more antiseptic.) Shake well and screw the lid on securely.
  9. A funnel inside a small jar with water.

  10. I actually ended up pouring the rinse into a chili sauce bottle, I liked the shape.
  11. A recycled bottle.

  12. If you don't mind cooties from others who are sharing with you, just shake before use, take a swig and gargle. Rinse well after, of course. This is very refreshing! I decided to place a little stack of medicine cups in our cabinet so all the little hands can pour a clean amount each time.
  13. Jars of mouth rinse and tooth powder.

  14. I also decided to spruce our bottles up a bit by taping pictures from magazines onto the front, a little label written on a paper grocery sack, and tied with twine from the dollar store. These would also make very nice and extremely inexpensive gifts. Enjoy!
  15. Jars of mouth rinse and tooth powder.

My dentist says both are much too abrasive to use on the teeth. I found that interesting because when I was a kid baking soda was the go to for "natural" toothpaste. The thinking is different today!

Ask your dentist to be sure.

Also, chemically, baking powder has different ingredients also and needs acid to be more like baking soda in baking, so I am guessing even if it wasn't abrasive it would need something else to act like soda.

'Is baking soda (or even baking powder) safe to use for brushing your teeth' is probably one of the most controversial subjects you'll find online.

From just a small amount of research it appears that a very large percentage of sites recommend using baking soda on a daily basis while only a small percentage state to never use it.

Many sites recommend using baking soda with hydrogen peroxide but I did see that many recommend no heavy brushing and only use twice a week. Most sites do recommend using tooth paste that has baking soda as an ingredient.

I believe this can be very confusing when most of the 'dental' sites have baking soda as their first DIY home remedies.
Many sites also say it is safe to use baking powder while others say do not use it.

Some comments:
"Although abrasivity can be good, it is more dangerous than safe. Your enamel might get hurt and worn away if you apply baking soda daily for cleaning and brushing.

As a result, your teeth will become more sensitive and prone to dental cavities.
Baking soda has an abrasive nature. While it's great at removing built-up plaque and surface stains, it can also damage your enamel if you brush with it too aggressively. Don't overuse the product -- Don't use baking soda for whitening purposes more than twice a week."

I would recommend that if you use either of these products you would use caution and do your own research as to whether it is safe for your personal use.
1. talk to your dentist before using these on a daily basis
2. never use on a daily basis
3. brush teeth with a gentle motion when using these products.
4. use regular tooth paste 90% of the time (dental hygienist).
5. use floss after every meal
6. cut down on sugar products; especially soft drinks.

At the moment, there are a lot of conflicting opinions about the use of baking soda in the teeth cleaning. Some argue that this is a very abrasive substance, while other dentists consider that this it is low abrasive: "Since baking soda is the softer material, it is not considered very abrasive and it will not harm tooth enamel! The American Dental Association studied Relative Dentin Abrasiveness to determine abrasiveness of various toothpastes." www.dentalblu.com/.../the-truth-about-baking-soda-as-toothpaste... There is this scale which shows the RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasion) of many common types of toothpaste.
Baking soda is only listed at 7 - Low Abrasive (0-70).

"When using baking soda as toothpaste Dr. Depp recommends putting baking soda in a small dish or shot glass, wetting your toothbrush and dipping it in the baking soda, making a thick paste, and then brushing like normal. This thick paste will scrub away stains and bacteria. Baking soda is a great alternative to regular toothpaste for people who are worried about scrubbing away their enamel with abrasive paste, however it should be noted that baking soda does not have fluoride in it, which is important to protect your teeth from cavities.
It is important to be cautious when reading online toothpaste remedies that involve baking soda. A common misconception is that if you mix baking soda with apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, or other acidic substances that it becomes a great tooth whitener but this is incorrect. Acidic materials such as these will harm your teeth more than help them. Acid will eat away at the tooth enamel, softening your teeth and allowing the baking soda to erode away even more of the structure of your teeth causing many more problems like cavities. Harmful combinations with acids like these should not be used. Plain baking soda and water does a fine job at scrubbing away stains and spots." www.dentalblu.com/.../the-truth-about-baking-soda-as-toothpaste...

Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda, cream of tartar and sometimes cornstarch. Cream of tartar is a dry acid. Acid destroys enamel, so do not use baking powder instead baking soda in the teeth cleaning recipe.

I want to make my own tooth powder from natural ingredients. I would like this powder to be safe enough for everyday use. I would also like to use sage or the equivalent to whiten my teeth as well. I have often seen salt listed as an ingredient; I have also seen people in the dental world warn against the use of any salt because they say it causes microscopic abrasions in the tooth enamel. Is there a safe, homemade tooth powder that whitens, too, and can be used on a daily basis? All the best to everyone!

I got tired of paying extra for whitening toothpastes. My dentist told me to use plain baking soda. I've been using it now for two years and my teeth are whiter than they've ever been. I'm a heavy tea drinker and a smoker, and since using the baking soda, I have very white teeth. Just wet your toothbrush and dip it into the soda and brush! You'll be amazed at the results in just a couple of days.

*seconds SJackie* I do the exact same thing with baking soda twice a week. I don't do it every day because I really don't like the taste. I started doing it about two years ago because I was in college and couldn't afford to get my teeth cleaned as often as I was used to. I noticed the difference within a couple of weeks. My parents have been doing this for the past 15 years and both of them have beautiful NATURAL LOOKING white teeth.

Old Fashioned Tooth Powder
2 Tbsp dried lemon or orange rind
1/4 cup baking soda
2 Tsp salt
Place rinds in food processor, grind until peel becomes a fine powder. Add baking soda and salt then process a few seconds more until you have a fine powder. Store in an airtight tin or jar. Dip moistened toothbrush into mixture, brush as usual.

I don't think this recipe is safe for everyday use but I ensure you to use it twice a week.

you don't have to use salt if you don't wish for. I don't use salt because some people said it can cause tooth disease.

A very good, older dentist told my husband to mix a paste of a small amount of baking soda and a little peroxide and using a CHILD'S SOFT brush, gently brush his gums and each tooth. We both do this now and it's great. Our teeth are getting whiter and our gums are healthier... Leaves your mouth VERY fresh.

The best tooth powders are made from a mixture of rice husk ash, cinnamon powder and clove powder mixed with rock salt. This has been used for ages in India.

I have been using baking soda for awhile, twice a day concentrating on stained areas with my electric toothbrush. It starts whitening and removing touch stains in a few days. I finish by mixing some hydrogen peroxide in with the baking soda and brushing with it for about a minute. My teeth always feel like I've had a professional cleaning, too.
