Honey Turnip Cough Syrup

Diamond Post Medal for All Time! 1,246 Posts

My parents have been using this all-natural method to make their own cough syrup since I can remember. Turnips and honey have awesome natural antibiotic qualities to them. When they meld together, they make a fantastic medicine. This is just as effective as store-bought syrups for cough and congestion, yet it has no side effects. You can keep refilling the turnip with honey to make more of the medicine.

You can use a large turnip and cut it in half, or you can use a small turnip and scoop out the top.

Honey in cut Turnip

Ingredients:

Steps:

  1. Cut turnip in half and scoop out a good amount from the middle with a spoon. Place a couple teaspoons of honey inside the hole so there's enough room for the turnip to "sweat" to create the medicine.
  2. Honey in a turnip half

  3. After a few hours, the syrup will be ready in the middle of the turnip. Drink it, then refill with honey as needed.

I'm pretty sure it is a turnip, looking at the pictures.

Does this cough syrup need to be refrigerated, and also how long will it last?

No, you just make it as needed. So you put a dollop of honey inside to let it sweat at room temperature, then you drink it. If you're only going to need a bit, then just make a bit.

If you happen to make too much, you can fridge it for a couple days in an airtight container.

My mother used to put slices of turnip, which are sweeter naturally, into bowl, covered with sugar, then alternate with more of each. It was kept in the pantry. It certainly worked. Turnips, by the way, are purple and white.
Failing that, she'd use swede. Swedes are bigger, but worked just as well. Swedes are usually what you get in summer, and through to spring, brownish purple in colour. The skins of both are edible, make great stock and are used in proper Pease Pudding.

I'm also going to remember this next time it's needed. I really love natural things like this as they are healthier for us without any side effects as you said. Thank you for this :)

You're very welcome! I hope you never need it, as I hope you always stay in tip top shape, but when you naturally do, I think you'll love its fast-soothing effect! :)

Dextromethorphan Hbr is a very good cough medication. When it came on the market years ago, you could get a box of the little pills for about a dollar plus. Recently, I checked with the pharmacy to see if they still carried it. They still do. The cheapest preparation they had was a small bottle of liquid for $27.00. No Go!

I will try your honey and turnip. Thanks for the post.
