In the U.S. a stick of butter is typically equal to 1/4 lb = 8 Tablespoons = 4 ounces = 1/2 cup = 113 grams.
If a recipe calls for 1 stick of butter it is probably referring to this measurement. Although, there are some brands that sell 1 lb. packages of butter with 8 sticks. These sticks would be half of the above-mentioned measurements. In other countries, butter is sold in different sized blocks that often don't include tablespoon markings.

Here on ThriftyFun, we have a lot of questions that come up about how much is in a stick of butter. Some recipes in the U.S. call for a "stick" of butter, which is confusing to people coming from other countries where butter often comes in blocks without tablespoon markings. 
Also, within the U.S. a stick is not a standard size brand to brand. Some brands sell 8 Tbsp. sticks and others sell 4 Tbsp. sticks.
Since I am currently living outside of the United States, I thought I would share with the Thriftyfun community what the butter I buy here looks like. The butter I can get is imported, coming from either France or New Zealand.

I've seen a few people over the past couple of years ask how many ounces or cups a stick of butter is.
Most sticks of margarine are the same size. Typically they are equal to 8 tablespoons or 1/2 cup. This is a page about How much margarine is a stick?.
A stick of butter, when whipped, will weigh the same (4 oz), but it's volume will be increased. Therefore, when you are substituting whipped butter in recipes it is important to measure by weight.
There are 8 tablespoons in a standard stick of butter. Check the cube wrapper for lines which you can use to cut the butter into as many tablespoons as you need.

Butter is wrapped in 1 pound packages, and there are 4 sticks in a package so 1 stick is 1/4 pound. A pound is 16 ounces, therefore a stick is 4 ounces. I'm surprised I remember that. Up here in Canada we use grams and kilograms now. :) (09/10/2009)

The butter I buy is eight sticks in a one pound package. All you have to do is read the individual wrapper. Each wrapper shows the amount of tablespoons, cups and ounces. (09/10/2009)

The way they normally sell butter in the States is in pound packages and there are four individually wrapped sticks in each package. Each stick is 1/4 pound or 4 oz. It would equal 1/2 cup or 8 tablespoons. (06/09/2009)

Some companies here in the States are now selling that pound of butter in eight sticks instead of four sticks. Land o' Lakes is the brand I use and they recently switched to the eight sticks per pound.
Anyway, any stick of butter has markings on the individual wrappers here that show the tablespoon and/or cup amounts so if a recipe calls for 'a stick' you might want to find out the detailed equivalent measure. Sorry if I sound ignorant but I am curious if there are amount markings on Australia's sticks of butter? (06/10/2009)
