Refinishing or Restoring a Garden Figurine?

This 2-3' tall statue from the Jim Shore Collection is fading and has some flaking of paint. I would appreciate your suggestions on how to restore it.

Go to any crafts store like michaels and tell them you need a weather proof paint for ceramic

Jim Shore statues are really nice but they may have some special coatings that could cause problems when cleaning and restoring.

  • I would recommend you contact the Jim Shore company and ask them what cleaner and paints you should purchase.

  • They will also have the exact color names you need if you are going to try and match in places and not redo the complete statue.
  • You should ask them about what steps to take to remove the flaking paint because this does not usually happen with these statues.
  • You can try this link:

Thank you very much for your help. I must say that the company is not very helpful.

Sad - some companies are only interested in the sales and not customer service.
I'm just not sure why your statue is flaking as none of my garden statues have done this.

Have you tried just brushing off the flakes and maybe wait until you can find out more about the paint etc.?
Maybe Google Jim Shore with your zip and see if anyone near you is selling this line as you might be able to get help from a store. I seem to remember that an Ace Hardware (near me) sold these and they are usually always helpful. I would ask Ace hardware for help with this as they have garden statues and all sorts of paint supplies. Be sure to ask how to prepare the statue for touch-up as well as the best type of paint.
I really do not consider this a "craft" project as from the looks of your statue there will be some intricate work involved. You may have to try several "shades" of color before you find a match.
If all else fails, go to a Walmart type store or a paint store and pick up several color "cards" and try to match these with your stature's main color.

Jim Shore customer service does not recommend customers trying to repaint statues because they are works of art! I asked if it would be best to just toss it in the trash and go buy a new one, and they said that it was up to me. I don't think too much of that company now.

Difficult to believe that customer service has reached that point but I still like your statue and believe you could refresh it with a little research on colors and maybe some good advice from Ace Hardware or True Value Hardware as I go to either of those stores for paint advice and hopefully you would have good luck also.

Get indoor outdoor crafy paint. Sand paint and seal. I would seal the whole statue.
