Donating Old Greeting Cards

Category Advice

January 18, 2014

Greeting CardsI have accumulated quite a lot of assorted greeting cards (birthday, get well, etc.) that I can't use, but surely someone can use them. Where can I send them by 3rd of 4th class mail? Thanks.

You can take them to a Retirement Center in your hometown. They will either give them to the residents there, or sell them in their little (recycle) gift shop if they have one. You could probably also give them to a women's shelter, or a church for their missionary program. Some churches have a room where they stock shelves with donated items for their missionaries.

You could also send them to "Samaritan's Purse." They would find a good use for them.

Some ideas on where you can donate old greeting cards:

  • St. Jude still accepts recycled card program, read exemptions via site stjudesranch.org/.../

  • Contact schools (daycare or art classes if they'd like them)
  • Local charities
  • You could repurpose cards into Christmas gift tags, create new cards, ornaments & etc.

Daycare centers love old greeting cards. They can use them for art projects for small childern. I do believe that Saint Jude's Children Ranch still accepts old greeting cards. You can also try to donate them to art and craft center.

They could use them for different types of craft projects or even for bottle art. Other than this cut them up and make some name tags with them for the holiday season.

Looks like Open Arms of Minnesota may still accept unused birthday cards:

Cards are heavy and mailing to charities is nice, but what I have found is it is better to take a large or medium USPS mailing box (the one flat rate kind), and fill up a the box with them and then list the for sale on eBay.

I then use the proceeds either for donating the money to my favorite charity or for household expenses.

I am pasting a link of the sold auctions on eBay at the moment so you can get a feel for how to write the ad, photograph, price, and sell.

www.ebay.com/.../i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=large+lot+vintage...

There is a huge market for old cards (used or new) with artists and junk journal creators. If your home is smoke and odor free be sure to mention this in the ad as it is a huge plus for selling.

Post back with updates on what you decide!

PS if you have not sold before, I can walk you through the process!

You can call the local preschools and ask if they need them. The nursing homes, senior centers always need things for crafts. I used to make "Get well, Hope you feel better soon,Sunshine" cards for people in the hospital, out of used cards and construction paper.

I am an environmental educator, and am always in need of greeting cards for lots of projects I teach! I can use the entire card, front and back (many of the sayings can be re-used for multiple projects!). If you'd be willing to help, please send cards to my attention. Thanks very, very much!

Most elementary schools will use them, especially Christmas cards. But they will likely not turn down your cards. Phone around.

I was a teacher for years, and we used cards for numerous projects.

Sunday schools might use them as well.

St. Jude's Ranch for Children only needs the fronts of the cards (only send ones that do not have any personal writing on the back). It will also save you in postage.

Other places you can see may want used cards they can recycle to do crafts or make new cards are day care centers, shelters, local charity organizations even prisoners.

I have several cartons of brand new notecards I received as samples from my factory. They are mostly full boxes, still shrinkwrapped. I would like to see them go to good use. I live in Hingham, Massachusetts on the south shore of Boston. Suggestions?

One way to reuse greeting cards is put a white label over the signature which is generally on the inside, sign it and send it on. This way the card can be used multiple times.

Looking for an envelope? Go to a store where they sell greeting cards and ask to speak to the person who stocks the cards. Ask the person if you could have the envelopes that they find that don't have a card to go with them. This is a great way to collect different sizes of envelopes and in color too.

Editor's Note: This organization appears to be no longer in operation. Cards sent to this address have been returned to the sender.

I am an environmental educator and would love to have your cards for the workshops I teach to kids, from preschool to high school. I can use the entire card, including the saying inside, which we use for multiple purposes. Also, I can really use everyday cards such as birthday, anniversary, get-well, etc. If you'd like to help, please send your cards to: Earth Inspired Crafts, P. O. Box 1981, Allen, TX 75013-1981. Thanks so much!

Where can I send unused cards of all categories? I have many that I have been given when I donate to certain organizations, but I cannot use them all.

I would rather give them to anyone who can use them instead of tossing them into the recycle bin.

I have some really pretty used Christmas cards, birthday cards, and other greeting cards. I hate to throw them away, if I tear off the written part and just save the front of the card is there anywhere I can send them to be used for crafts.

I would like to send used greeting cards that I have saved for many years to an organization that can use them. My husband and I are downsizing and I don't just want to toss them out. Please forward to me a current address of someone or an organization that would like the greeting cards to use for their purpose. I will mail them out as soon as I receive an address.

Thank you very much for your assistance in this matter.
